Beginner

Limited or no prior pickleball experience.

  • Are learning the non-volley zone (kitchen) rules

Players brand new to pickleball or with minimal playing experience.

 

Novice

Developing players at a recreational level.

 

Novice players have some playing experience and are working toward consistency and confidence.

 

Novice players typically:

  • Have improved stroke mechanics but are still inconsistent
  • Can serve and return reliably but with limited placement
  • Can sustain moderate rallies
  • Are learning proper doubles positioning and teamwork
  • Are beginning to use dinks, volleys, and soft shots
  • Still make unforced errors under pressure

Recreational players who understand the basics and want to improve consistency and game awareness.

 

Intermediate

Consistent players with growing tactical awareness.

 

Intermediate players have moved beyond basic skills and play with intention and strategy.

 

Intermediate players typically:

  • Maintain consistent forehands and backhands with directional control
  • Serve and return with purpose and depth
  • Use dinks, drops, and resets with increasing consistency
  • Understand when to attack versus reset a point
  • Can sustain longer rallies and limit unforced errors
  • Demonstrate solid court positioning and partner communication

League players and regular participants seeking competitive, structured play.

 

Advanced

Highly experienced and strategic players.

 

Advanced players have a strong command of pickleball skills and tactics and can execute under pressure.

 

Advanced players typically:

  • Display high consistency across all shots
  • Use advanced strategies such as speed-ups, counters, and roll volleys
  • Control the non-volley zone and dictate point tempo
  • Anticipate opponents’ shots and exploit weaknesses
  • Communicate effectively and move seamlessly with their partner
  • Maintain composure and precision in fast-paced rallies

Advanced league players, tournament competitors, and high-level recreational players.
